Jani Lane, Former lead singer of Warrant, found dead in hotel
August 12, 2011
“Jani Lane’s is yet another sad story of a boy who attained his dreams of greatness, only to be blindsided by the pressures, temptations and disappointments of those same dreams. We all watched over the years, as he soared, stumbled, fell, then got up again and again. Tragically, he will get up no more. RIP Jani.”

Def Leppard Post Tribute to Joe Elliott’s Late Father: A tribute to Joe Elliott Sr.
July 12, 2011
As most of you are probably aware of by now, sadly Joe Elliott’s father, Joe Elliott Sr., passed away last week.
Here is a touching tribute to him by Malvin Mortimer (Def Leppard’s tour manager) on Leppard’s website. You can read the entire letter here: A tribute to Joe Elliott Sr. – by Malvin Mortimer (friend & tour manager)
“At the age of 18 Joe had an opportunity to join a band. The band met regularly in Joe’s bedroom in the family home in Sheffield, UK- with the full support of his parents.
That band came to be known as Def Leppard.
In 1978 Joe asked his dad for some help to finance the recording and release of the first few songs written by the young and up and coming musicians. Joe senior put up 150 UK pounds. (at that time, about $500.) They recorded at Fairview studios in Hull, East Yorkshire, it cost 148.50 and with the loose change they shared fish and chips on the way home. (Joe’s mother Cindy played guitar and taught Joe his first few chords, Joe Sr. actually recorded, on a primitive cassette device, Joe’s first ever song. Joe was eight years old. The song was entitled “Goin’ Forever”).
Joe Senior will be missed by Cindy, Joe and all of us that knew him.”

Jay Jay French Unveils The Pinkburst Project
April 18, 2011
Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French has launched The Pinkburst Project, a collection of custom-made guitars and amps built to create awareness for the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation. As part of the Project, the equipment will be auctioned to help raise funds for research, education and support for those affected by uveitis and other inflammatory eye diseases. On a very cool note, Twisted Sister will play a benefit concert for The Pinkburst Project on Friday, April 29, at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square, NYC.
The incredible one-of-a-kind collection up for auction includes custom guitars from Gibson, Fender, Paul Reed Smith, Epiphone, Gretsch and Martin, and custom amps from Marshall, Fender, Vox, Mesa, Orange, Hartke and Diamond. All will be offered for sale during the Skinner Fine Musical Instruments Auction on Sunday, May 1, 2011, in Boston.
“The Pinkburst Project was my way of calling attention to the virtually unknown disease called uveitis,” says Jay Jay. “In a world of cookie-cutter fundraisers, I wanted to do something that was different and really exciting, something that would get lots of attention with collectors of musical instruments, something never done before (and probably never again) and something that could hopefully raise a lot of money.” Uveitis is the leading cause of blindness among American girls, and one that Jay Jay and his family have been dealing with since his daughter, Samantha, was diagnosed with the condition at six years old. Samantha has successfully kept her sight thanks in no small part to the work of Dr. Stephen Foster and his associated doctors at MERSI (Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution) in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Foster and his Foundation will reap the benefit of this auction. You can check out more info on The Pinkburst Project, and get up close and personal with the items up for auction right here.
Tickets for the Twisted Sister concert can be scored through Ticketmaster or directly through the Best Buy Theater box office (no service charge!) located at 1515 Broadway at W. 44th Street in NYC. Phone: 212.930.1950.
Twisted Sister’s A.J. Pero announced as National Spokesperson for Fallen Blue
April 4, 2011
Fallen Blue was created as a means to provide support, both emotional and financial, for the families of police officers who are killed outside the line of duty. It is with great pride that we are honored to announce that A.J. Pero has become our National Spokesperson. Mr. Pero has spent his life entertaining rock music fans as the drummer for Twisted Sister. He has also dedicated his life to helping others less fortunate with his charity work.

“My name is A.J. Pero and I play drums for the Heavy Metal Band, TWISTED SISTER. I have been asked by John and Rachael from Fallen Blue to be a part of the Brotherhood. I jumped at the opportunity. I have become the National Spokesperson for this non-profit organization called Fallen Blue. I am honored to be a part of this family, this vital organization. I will help out 150%, so we can achieve our goals. Our goals are to help the families of these brave men and women who die outside the line of duty. When a police officer is killed outside the line of duty – whether accidentally or by their own hand due to job related stress – they don’t receive the benefits. Some families can’t even afford to have a funeral, never mind future bills. I’ve experienced that years ago when a friend on the job, stressed out and emotionally fried, shot himself. Our neighborhood stood together to help the wife and children. We had benefits and cookouts to raise money, but it just wasn’t enough. This organization can and will become vital nationwide if we all recognize this is a reality and pull together our resources for all Law Enforcement Officers. Even though there are many different branches, we are all the same underneath and need to be treated as such. We would also like to eventually erect a physical Memorial where we can go and honor those killed outside the line of duty.”
Please join us in welcoming A.J. Pero to our cause, and check out http://fallenblue.org to keep up with our latest efforts to help serve those who protect us.

STRYPER GET BACK TO THEIR ROOTS ON COVERS-HEAVY SET, ‘THE COVERING’
February 12, 2011
Christian rockers Stryper are offering fans a headbanging view of who their influences were early on, with the arrival of an almost entire album’s worth of covers, ‘The Covering.’ Set for release on February 15th via Big3 Records, the album includes twelve rocking covers, as well as an all-new original tune, “God.” And most significantly, the album marks the return of original bassist Tim Gaines back into the Stryper fold, setting up the first Stryper release in years to feature the definitive line-up of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums).
According to Michael Sweet, the impetus for putting out a mostly covers set was a simple one. “Every Stryper album is pretty serious and pretty bold in the lyrical faith sense of the word. We just wanted to roll our sleeves up, cut loose, and have some fun.” And when it came time to pick out a listing of tunes to cover, all the band had to do was look back upon their club days. “Growing up, before Stryper was even Stryper, we were a cover band. We played Gazzarri’s on the Strip for years – we would do originals but also do covers, as well. We always did Priest covers and Maiden covers, all those bands that we grew up on and influenced us.”
What fans get is a CD that runs the gamut from 1970’s era classic rock (Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” Kiss’ “Shout It Out Loud,” etc.) to 1980’s era heavy metal (Black Sabbath’s “Heaven and Hell,” the Scorpions’ “Blackout,” “Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper,” etc.). “A few things we set out to do on this album was to stay true to the original – we didn’t want to disrespect the original versions,” explains Michael. “I’m never going to sound like Bruce Dickinson or Ronnie James Dio, nor would I ever try to. And having me sing the song puts our own spin on it. We just all did our own thing and with our own touches and feel – Robert, Tim, Oz, and myself – it has that Stryper feel to it as well.”
Big3 Records Chairman Bill Edwards adds, “We are excited to allow Stryper the creative freedom to do what they do best, and take this album to the next level. We are very excited about working with the band and helping make ‘The Covering’ a widespread success.”
To support ‘The Covering,’ Stryper is planning a tour that begins in March, and when it comes to the set list, it will contain quite a few surprises for longtime fans. “We’re probably going to pull out four Stryper songs that haven’t been played in the set in years. And then we’re probably going to do four covers. And then we’ve got a whole slew of other Stryper songs that we’ve been playing for a long time. So we probably have 20 songs in the set.” Stryper fans rejoice, more anthemic metal will soon be on the way!
‘THE COVERING’ TRACKLIST:
1. Set Me Free (Sweet) 2. Blackout (Scorpions) 3. Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath) 4. Lights Out (UFO) 5. Carry On My Wayward Son (Kansas) 6. Highway Star (Deep Purple) 7. Shout It Out Loud (Kiss) 8. Over The Mountain (Ozzy Osbourne) 9. The Trooper (Iron Maiden) 10. Breaking The Law (Judas Priest) 11. On Fire (Van Halen) 12. Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin) 13. God (Stryper)

Tesla, Cinderella and High Seas Rock the Ship!!
November 22, 2010
The Shiprocked Cruise was marked by high seas, heavy winds and even heavier metal. As the Shiprockers boarded the ship, they were quite the spectacle to all the fanny pack and Velcro shoe wearing “Cruisers.” Many an unsuspecting retiree was heard commenting about all the long hair and tattoos on the passengers and band members as we embarked the vessel.
Day One was kicked of by amazing performances by Drowning Pool and Blackstone Cherry, a southern inspired hard rocking band from Kentucky. As we sailed the high seas, passengers saw two wedding proposals. Congratulations to both couples! There were many old friends that were reunited on the boat and shared a drink or two while trying to get pictures with their favorite stars from the past and the many stars of the future from the newer bands, all of whom made themselves accessible to the fans on the boat. Even if they were being pursued by photo taking maniacs with novelty sunglasses that were collecting shots of the stars like they were on some sort of Heavy Metal safari. Jeff Keith of Tesla and Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust earned especially high marks from all the fans for being cordial, endearing, and tolerant of the many people that wanted a picture with them. Tesla took the main stage for the opening night performance and delivered as usual. They played all the standards to a crowd that knew every word and sang along passionately. If you have ever been on a cruise ship you know how small the auditorium that the Magician in the sequined suit calls home, so to say the shows were intimate would be an understatement. It was like seeing a headlining national touring act in a small town movie theater.
On the second day, high winds made for rough seas and the boat was not only rocking figuratively, but literally as well. Cinderella, who was voted as the most requested band by the 2009 Shiprockers, was the much anticipated headliner for Friday night. Tom Keifer’s vocals were impressive and the stage presence of the entire band showed why they are still popular today. Other bands playing both before and after Cinderella included The Letter Black, Aranda and late night shows by Drowning Pool and Broken Teeth. Drowning Pool played until after 2 am in what was one of the most memorable of the trip. After finishing an ear splitting set of their music they played an encore of several Pantera songs that included lead singer Ryan McComb taking the show into the crowd.
Day 3 featured another full day of music and the first chance to see Atlanta based Sevendust prior to catching Vince Neil in main theater. They had the crowd on the pool deck bouncing and fist pumping in a frenzy. The show included a surreal scene seeing such a great band on a pool deck of a cruise ship while Tesla frontman Jeff Keith and New York Yankee outfielder Johnny Damon (who was on board as a fan of the rock) are rocking out to the show along with all the other fans. Vince Neil was the headliner for the final night and fought through a case of layringitis to play a mix of his new Tattoos and Tequila and classic Motley Crue standards.
The cruise was a great success and makes coming home to snow on the ground, temps in the 30’s and work a real drag. It’s great to see all the repeat offenders that showed up for Shiprock 2010. I’m already anticipating next years line-up and can’t wait for the announcement of when we can book the trip.
