Twisted Sister Double Live: North Stage ‘82, NY Steel ‘01

is a double-disc DVD package consisting of two Twisted Sister concerts, 19 years apart. It contains over three hours of the most Twisted rock’n'roll and heavy metal ever!

In 1982, Twisted Sister was the wildest, most outrageous club band on the Long Island, New York scene. As a goodbye to their loyal fans just prior to the band crossing the Atlantic to record its groundbreaking Under The Blade debut album, guitarists Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda, vocalist Dee Snider, bassist Mark Mendoza and drummer A.J. Pero performed at The North Stage Theater on Long Island.

This incendiary concert footage-in its entirety-represents the only commercially-released video performances of long-retired club favorites “Lady’s Boy” and I’ll Never Grow Up” among the 14 stand-out tracks. The disc comes complete with brand new interviews from all five musicians about their feelings as they left the New York club scene to become an international phenomenon.

In 2001, with New York City reeling from the effects of September 11, Twisted Sister, who hadn’t played together for 13 years, were asked if they’d headline “New York Steel” to benefit the families of those firefighters and police officers who lost their lives. Putting aside personal difficulties for the good of the cause, the band started rehearsing. Scenes of those rehearsals, as well as profound new interviews chronicling the intense inter-band chemistry, are revealing and fascinating. When the band was introduced that night, with New York Mets baseball hero Mike Piazza on stage, the reaction was so spectacular that the seeds were planted for a return to form that continues to this day.

Megadeth’s vital, Platinum-certified album, Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?, has been digitally remastered for the first time and expanded for a commemorative 25th Anniversary release in multiple configurations on July 12 by Capitol/EMI.

All of the versions, including a 2CD lift-top box, digital album, and a deluxe 5Disc+3LP box set, include a previously unreleased 1987 concert from the band’s first world tour and new liner notes written by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich.

In his liner notes for the new edition, Dave Mustaine reflects on writing the album’s title track: “I had written other lyrics by now, but there was something different about ‘Peace Sells’ because it told my story about my faith; my beliefs; my distrust of government; my work ethic; my integrity. This was MY song.”

Released in 1986, Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? was Megadeth’s second album and the band’s first Capitol/EMI release. The acclaimed album thrust Megadeth into the international spotlight, and it remains a powerful thrash metal staple.

Megadeth is currently on tour in Europe. On April 23, Megadeth will again join forces with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax for The Big Four Festival in Indio, California, and The Big Four have confirmed several European shows for July. Megadeth will also play more than 20 North American dates in July and August on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival with Disturbed, Godsmack, Machine Head, In Flames and Trivium.

“I’ve been a fan of Night Ranger since I was a teenager. I was pretty convinced when the song ‘When You Close Your Eyes’ came on the radio, they were singing directly to me: ‘Angie, come closer to me.’ My best friend back then, also an Angie, was pretty certain it was for her. Regardless, no hairbrush microphone was immune when that song played.

Now I’m (gulp) 42 years old, married and have a grown son. We often take road trips and it never seems to fail that on one particular road, just outside of our town, ‘Sister Christian’ will play. It has been aptly dubbed by my husband as the ‘Sister Christian Highway.’

And don’t for one second think that just because we drive a minivan we don’t turn it up as loud as our little speakers will allow! When CDs were launched I had just installed the loudest car stereo I could find, with the best speakers I could find. I was going to scare the cr*p out of my friends by having them sit in the car, crank it up, and blast them with the “Rock in America” guitar intro. Well, I did scare my friends, but I also blew out the speakers and shattered two windows in the car. I found new speakers, but went for a couple of weeks without windows. Therefore, my small town always heard me driving around with Night Ranger tunes blaring out the windows. I became known as the Night Ranger Kid that really knew how to rock. I’ve since seen them in concert many times, close to stage many times, but have never met them. I became a concert fanatic because of them, attending over 650 concerts to date. The fact that they’re still together making great rock n’ roll is a testament to their longevity. Rock on!”

“OTTER POPS! I recall reading Metal Edge in the ‘80s and Gerri Miller wrote that Joey loved OTTER POPS! I’ll bring them and some Heinekens for the lesson!

After sifting through thousands of great entries, the HOH is happy to announce we have a Grand Prize winner for the VIP trip to the M3 Rock Festival next weekend – Mike Kinler from Luling, Louisiana who listens to Bayou 95.7 – WKBU!

There were many reasons we liked Mike’s entry:

1) He was a first responder who weathered out Hurricane Katrina and stayed to help.

2) He wanted to set a good example for his two kids, so he went back to law school.

3) He actually admits losing his virginity to … Warrant! “Cherry Pie” anyone?

4) He proudly admits to being an ex-mulleteer … and he sent us a photo to prove it. Mike, that is F-I-N-E ! ! !

Mike has decided to take his lovely wife Mary to the show. In addition to getting the free airfare, hotel and show tickets, Mike and Mary will be meeting lots of the bands on the bill, and we have confirmed that they will even be able to hang out with Warrant and tell them his story!

Dee, I am a proud ex-mullet wearing headbanger from the New Orleans Area. I may not have the hair any more but the music lives on inside my heart. First let me tell you how my life has changed since my younger days. I am now a husband and father of 2. I went through hurricane Katrina, and since my present job makes me a first responder I stayed and rode out the storm here in New Orleans.

Since the storm I have returned to school to get a degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. I am a senior and about to graduate in May. I know it is a little late to be back in school at the age of 38, but I wanted to be a good example for my kids. This would be a great graduation gift after 4 years of a fulltime job, full time school, and full time family. I could really use the weekend away and listening to some kick-ass metal bands from my day rocking on stage would be a dream come true. I have seen almost every one of these bands at one time in my life and some more than once, but never together. I even lost my virginity as Warrant was spinning on my record player…that’s right…vinyl before vinyl was considered retro and cool. Don’t even think I had a cassette player at that time.

I am sure you will have a lot of great emails to pick through but I hope you at least consider my request to be the one who goes to the show, I would even consider taking the wife with me for the weekend. Since she has been great support as I have been so, so, so, so, so busy the last few years. <-- catch that hint about how I could use this get away again? because I could do a bunch more as subtle as that one.

HURTSMILE

This is the latest from Gary Cherone (Extreme, Van Halen), who has teamed up with his brother Mark to write his most succinct record to date. The self-titled, HURTSMILE is a raw sonic sucker punch in the face! From the opening buzz saw riff of “Just War Theory” to the epic finale of “Slave” and “Beyond The Garden/Kicking Against the Goads”, Gary continues to push and poke you in the ear with his lyrically provocative themes.

“Hurtsmile was a long time coming… I always wanted to write a record with my brother,” says Gary. “I’m a big fan of Mark’s song writing and his snarling guitar riffs.” The timing was right as Extreme was in-between their touring and record cycle, leaving Gary the freedom. They recruited Joe Pessia (bass) an alumnus of Nuno Bettencourt’s Dramagods as well as the guitar player for Tantric. Joe also engineered, and co-produced the record with Gary. To round off the lineup they enlisted heavy hitter Dana Spellman on drums “It’s an east coast/Boston thing,” states Gary. “Mark, my brother, was in a band with Nuno’s brother… Joe was in Nuno’s band and Dana was a friend, and student of Mike Mangini (former Extreme drummer) … we like to keep it in the family.”

The lineup is not the only thing familiar with the band. In true Cherone fashion, the record is chock full of swaggering guitar, soaring vocals and the trademark Cherone eclecticism on tracks such as “Jesus Would You Meet Me”, the reggae-tinged “Just War Reprise” and the Dylan-esque “The Murder of Daniel Faulkner (4699)”. “Hurtsmile was about returning to my roots, writing a record in my basement, a straight up rock ‘n’ roll record… but it turned out to be more diverse and ambitious than I expected.”

Gary is no stranger to taking on intense topics, and Hurtsmile is no exception. The first half of the record is a group of more loosely knit songs such as the cynically inquisitive “Just War Theory”, the limit’s of free speech “Tolerance Song” and the disturbingly mesmerizing “Kaffur (Infidel)”, inspired by the beheading of journalist Daniel Pearl.
The 2nd half of the record is more conceptually cohesive; an introspective look at the nature of man and the condition of the human heart. “Stillborn” introduced earlier, and “Set Me Free” both touch on mans inclination toward darkness, culminating with an epic journey from sin to salvation… “Slave” to “Beyond the Garden/Kicking Against the Goads”.
For the most part both themes are represented as two sides of a record. A concept familiar to Extreme fans but make no mistake, whether reading between the lines or just moved by the visceral power of the music, this is a completely different type of record. Gary adds, “All the boys in the band bring something new to the table, and you’ll never know what hit you!”

Here’s a look at Julie’s winning entry:

A few months ago, I read on the House of Hair website about a March of Dimes charity bike run that Dee Snider was leading. The 50-mile run was scheduled to start in Lima, Ohio, and end in Cridersville — to be named Snidersville — how cool is that? Lima is 200 miles from our house, but we thought if Dee was going to be that close, we had to go. So, we rode the 200 miles just to be in the run.

My boyfriend, Bud, is one of Dee’s most loyal and dedicated fans. He saw Twisted Sister at the first Rocklahoma. He listens to the House of Hair EVERY Saturday night and keeps a log of all of the songs (even though they’re posted online). Dee, I have to check the playlist every Monday to confirm that we got all of the songs! If we go out Saturday night, we have to be home by 10pm for HOH. But, hey, I don’t mind…at least I know where he is every Saturday night, right? We subscribe to the BuzzCut, and he keeps a copy of each week’s issue. He watched every episode of Growing Up Twisted, and we emailed A&E to keep the show on! When he met Dee and Suzette and the kids in Snidersville, he felt like he already knew them, and Dee and his family treated Bud as if he were a friend of the family. They were all so nice to him…it really meant a great deal to him! They made him feel appreciated! Meeting Dee was a dream come true for Bud.

We are children of the ‘80s; in fact, that’s one of the things that really brought us together, our love for ‘80s music. That’s why seeing Rock of Ages in NYC would be a dream come true! After meeting for the first time at a friend’s house party, we ran into each other at a Poison concert and have been together ever since! Nothin’ but a good time! The concerts we have seen together could be pulled right from an HOH playlist: Alice Cooper, Cinderella, Danger Danger, Def Leppard, Dokken, Kiss, LA Guns, Lita, Journey, Scorpions, Trixter. Our local radio station sponsors an ‘80s time warp prom…my first chance to go was with Bud two years ago. He has gone every year since it started and dresses as some ‘80s character. He has gone with his buddies as ZZ Top. Last year, he was Magnum P.I. He collects everything ‘80s; movies, music, board games!

We are also helping to keep the metal alive by introducing my 13-year-old daughter to the HOH. Earlier this year, I took her to see Carrie Underwood. Let’s just say that, after we took her to see Trixter, Danger Danger, LA Guns and Dokken, now we’re taking her to see Bon Jovi and she wants to see Ozzy! Now she has Ozzy, Kiss, Journey, Bon Jovi, to name a few, on her iPod.

Another one of Bud’s faves is New York City, so meeting Dee and seeing him perform ON BROADWAY in Rock of Ages in his favorite city…well, that would make 2010 the best metal year yet! Everything about this contest seems to have been created just for Bud! All of his favorite things are wrapped up in this neat, not-so-little package! Please help me make Bud’s dream come true! Sometimes the most interesting projects arise from the most unusual circumstances. So it is that DOWN ‘n’ OUTZ, a project fronted by Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and backed by The Quireboys have recorded 13 modern cover versions of rare yet monumental tracks by 70’s rock pioneers Mott, Ian Hunter and British Lions.

“Mott the Hoople has always been my favorite band and it’s nice to see the rest of the rock world finally catch up and give them their due” says Elliott. Joe Elliott’s DOWN ‘n’ OUTZ supported the legendary British icons, Mott The Hoople, at one of their critically acclaimed 2009 reformation shows at the Hammersmith Odeon. Following a rapturous reception, the one night project took on a life and energy of its own and a demo was born. Joe Elliott’s DOWN ‘n’ OUTZ then set out to record a full length LP of classic material entitled My ReGeneration.

Joe Elliott takes up the story, “When Mott The Hoople announced they were reforming for a week worth of shows at the Hammersmith Odeon I was asked that I participate in some capacity. They’ve always been my favorite band and it’s nice to see the rest of the rock world finally catch up and give them their due.”

“But, what was I to do? It was suggested to me that the Quireboys would be up for offering their services. This was perfect! A fan since their first album, I loved the idea of working with a band as enthusiastic to do this as I was.”

“I decided that the thing to do was play some songs that like minded people thought they would never hear live again, if ever, songs by spin offs of Mott the Hoople – songs by Mott, Ian Hunter and British Lions. Songs that are close to my heart, songs that I’ve played every week for the best part of 35 years on record, cassette, CD, Ipod and now live.”

The album was produced by Joe Elliott with co-production by Ronan McHugh and recorded in Elliott’s own studio “Joe’s Garage” and Moor Hall Studio in Bedfordshire. In addition to Joe Elliott (Vocals/Guitar/Keyboards) the band featured The Quireboys’ Paul Guerin (Guitar), Guy Griffin (Guitar), Keith Weir

(keyboards), Phil Martin (drums) and bassist Ronnie Garrity (Raw Glory).

LOS ANGELES – Pantera found its growl and groove on COWBOYS FROM HELL, a landmark album whose bone-powdering intensity, razor-sharp riffing and pummeling rhythmic assault represented a turning point in modern metal when it was released in 1990. More than just Pantera’s major label debut, many consider this album to be the official debut of the Pantera lineup with singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul and bassist Rex Brown.

To celebrate the 20-year anniversary of COWBOYS FROM HELL, Rhino rounds up a three-disc Ultimate Edition, a three-disc Deluxe Edition, and a two-disc Expanded Edition. All three editions include a newly remastered version of the original album along with unreleased and rare live performances from the “Cowboys From Hell” Tour.

“’The Will To Survive’ is a great track. With so many killer songs, it was hard to pick and choose the ones that should make our major label debut,” says Paul. “After hearing it for the first time in about 20 years, its a pretty stellar performance and I am definitely proud that it will see the light of day for all the die hard Pantera fans around the world! It shows the true musical diversity of the band at that time!”

Along with the remastered version of COWBOYS FROM HELL, all three sets include a disc of live music recorded during the tour for the album. It begins with seven unreleased performances from Pantera’s September 15, 1990 appearance at the Foundations Forum metal convention in California, a show recorded for radio broadcast but never released commercially. The remainder of the disc contains the five-song EP Alive And Hostile, a collection of performances recorded in 1991 at the Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow that was previously available only in Australia as part of a 1994 boxed set.

After being turned down “twenty-eight times by every major label on the face of the earth,” ATCO Records A&R rep Mark Ross saw the band when Hurricane Hugo stranded him in Texas. The rest, as they say, is history, including another seven years and over a million miles of touring for COWBOYS to be certified Platinum (one million album sales) by the RIAA.

The album’s liner notes include essays by each of the band’s surviving members, producer Terry Date, and the aforementioned Ross. Recalling the first time he saw Pantera, Ross writes, “By the end of the first song, my jaw was on the floor. The sonic power of it all—the attitude and the musicianship—blew me away. Basically, you had to be an idiot to not think they’re amazing. I mean, how could you see these guys and not think, Holy shit!?”

Our good friend Herman Rarebell (ex-Scorpions drummer) has sent us copies of his kick ass new CD “Take It As It Comes” and his new Audio Book “My Life As a Scorpion”.

Few metal drummers have a name as recognizable as Herman Rarebell. And with good reason. After all, it was Rarebell’s drumming that helped propel the SCORPIONS into one of the 1980s’ most successful rock bands (as well as co-penning the all-time classic “Rock You Like A Hurricane”). And Herman is back once more with his latest album,”Take It As it Comes”, which was recently released via Dark Star Records.

A kick-ass, rockin’ good time, the album is available as a standard version, as well as a limited-edition box set, which comes with two discs and a card autographed by Herman ze German himself.

The new single from “Take It As it Comes” is the appropriately-titled “Let Me Rock You”.

Commented Herman: “I guess most of you guys know me as the former drummer of the SCORPIONS. Together with my friends Rudolf,Matthias, and Klaus, I enjoyed twenty truly awesome years of exhilarating rock and roll. Herman Rarebell began his life on the 18th of November 1949 in Saarbrucken, Germany, his zodiac sign being Scorpio. By the age of 12 his passion for drumming was so extreme that he would practice on anything available, including an old sloped chair. His song writing was influenced by the music of Led Zeppelin, a group which he still loves.

After qualifying in drums and piano at the Music School in Saarbrucken, and after he played with Mastermen (1965) and with Fuggs Blues (1968) he moved on to England from 1971 to 1977 where he was hoping to find the next great Heavy Metal Band and there Michael Schenker introduced him to the Scorpions and began his international career as drummer and songwriter for the Scorpions. He was a driving force for the band, leading it with the full sound of his drums and especially during the live appearances, making the band perform the songs in a spectacular way. He was an important composer in the history of the group, writing classic songs like “Another piece of meat”, “Falling in Love” and the second single from Savage Amusement “Passion rules the game” and writing the lyrics for some of the most classic songs of the band like “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, “Make It Real”, “Dynamite”, “Blackout”, “Arizona”, “Bad Boys Running Wild”, “Don’t Stop At the Top”, “Tease Me Please Me” and other songs. In 1982 he released his first solo album Nip In The Bud (which he re-recorded as Herman ze German & Friends with the help of some friends of his as guest such as members of Dokken, Great White, Ratt etc.) It is worth noting that he is and was the only musician of the Scorpions who did his own solo project while still a full member of the band.

In April of 1996 he left the band following their 1993 album Face the Heat and the third Scorpions’ live album Live Bites. His career with the band has seen his name on an international reputation boasting 32 million album sales. Surely with his absence, the consistency of the group was lost and the change in the sound was obvious to all the fans.

Maybe the fatigue from the non stop touring, maybe the disagreements regarding the recordings and musical directions of the upcoming Scorpions album (Pure Instinct) and making the acquaintance with Prince Albert were some of the reasons he decided to leave the group and to get involved with a new challenge, to become a producer and to co-find the record company Monaco Records. He participated in many of the projects as a drummer and he released a second solo album under the label called Stings Like a Scorpion, while he had already released Nip in the bud and Herman Ze German and Friends while he was still with the Scorpions which were produced by Ric Browde. The two albums are essentially the same but the latter has re-recorded vocals and a re-mix courtesy of Michael Wagener. The track “I’ll Say Goodbye” was co-written with Dokken main man Don Dokken. Artists on the album include bassist Juan Croucier of Ratt, vocalists Don Dokken, Jack Russell of Great White, Charlie Huhn of Victory, Steve Marriott and guitarists Chris Storey and David Cooper. His artistic restlessness lead him to a project with his wife Claudia Raab, former 7 Sins saxophonist and well known actress, and released a debut album The Rhythm of Art. Its musical direction was atmospheric dance music with saxophone, drums and electronic music. Herman also performed with some live appearances under the Art Meets Music project with shows which would become a lot more than regular Rock n’ Roll events, also featuring dancers as well as featuring original paintings by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and Ronald Muri, founder of the “Pop-Expressionist Movement”. He participated in the Drum Legends project with his friend Pete York (ex Spencer Davis Group) where they released a live CD & DVD with the contribution of Jazz drummer C.Antonini. He also released a great ’soft’ album with the Monte Carlo Pop Orchestra (Let me take you to the moon) as well as a single with the singer of Unlimited Ray Slijngaard (a remake of the song “The Eye of The Tiger”) showing his need to experiment.

Now Herman comes out with a new audiobook called “My Life As A Scorpion” and a CD called “Take It As It Comes”!

WIN TRIUMPH’S MAJESTIC ARENA ANTHEMS CELEBRATED ON THEIR NEW CD/DVD SET, “GREATEST HITS: REMIXED” !!
Few acts could whip an arena full of rockers into a frenzy as Triumph did throughout the late ‘70s and ‘80s, when the group’s best known line-up – guitarist/vocalist Rik Emmett, bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine, and drummer/vocalist Gil Moore – were at the peak of their powers. And it’s this exact time period that is focused on throughout Triumph’s new best of set – “Greatest Hits: Remixed”.

All of the classic tunes that were – and continue to be – in heavy rotation on rock radio (and the early days of MTV) are included here, namely, “Lay it on the Line,” “Hold On,” “Fight the Good Fight,” “Magic Power,” etc.

These fourteen tracks of anthemic metal have never sounded so good, as they were all recently remixed by Rich Chycki (who has previously worked with Aerosmith and Rush). The set also includes a previously unreleased recording – “Love Hurts” – which will be the lead-off single from Triumph’s ‘Greatest Hits: Remixed.’

“We have been planning this release forever,” says Levine. “For years, Triumph fans have been demanding that we give them a fresh greatest hits package and they are going to love this one.”

Also included in the set is a DVD mixed in 5.1 audio, that features eleven promo and live videos in widescreen plus additional unreleased videos for “Child of the City,” “Blinding Light Show,” and “Love Hurts,” and footage of the group’s 2008 induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The deluxe two-disc package will be housed in a six-panel digipak – including a 20-page color booklet, complete with liner notes, lyrics, and chockfull of vintage photos.

What else can I say…I wanna rock! It has been years since I have sprayed an entire can of Aqua-net on my mullet with wings and I have been craving an opportunity like this to fall into my lap. I recently celebrated my 34th birthday and had quite the epiphany…I haven’t partied like a rock star in years. I have teenage twin daughters, whom my husband and I have spent the better half of their lives training their ears to good wholesome headbanging rock.They have been getting so good at listening to a song and naming the band and sometimes even the lead singer..a parent’s dream..to have the youth of today appreciate the long guitar riffs, big hair, ripped jeans, and lots of shrilling solo’s…Thanks to your program, YouTube and the internet, we have been giving them insight on the way rockers rocked in our day…Everything from Guns ‘n Roses, Great White, Iron Maiden, AC/DC (a favorite), Cinderella and Motley Crue… My husband and I spend most of our time traveling in the VW driving kids around for school band or social events, that we listen to House of Hair the majority of the time Saturday nights on our way back home. We blast the music up till the point our speakers can’t handle anymore. It would be a dream of all rockers dreams, for my husband and I to play air guitar, head-bang and air drum amongst a “rocking audience” on-board a ship to the Bahamas vs. the blaring speakers within our VW. SHIPROCKED CRUISE ADDITIONAL CONTEST RULES

Grand Prize winner and guest will have to sign legal disclaimers. Major rules include:

1. Grand Prize winner and guest must live in the United States or Canada.

2. Grand Prize winner and guest must be 21 or over – no exceptions! Faxed copies of driver’s licenses or other official ID will be required if you are picked as the winner. Grand Prize winner and guest will also need to supply social security numbers for tax purposes. WINNER AND GUEST MUST HAVE A VALID U.S. OR CANADIAN PASSPORT.

3. Grand Prize winner and guest must originate flights from the same airport within the U.S. or Canada. Grand Prize winner and guest must be able to fly to Ft. Lauderdale and provide proper legal ID to the airline and to ShipRocked/MSC Cruise Line.

4. Lodging is one (1) oceanview stateroom, double occupancy on the cruise. In the event the winner is chosen from a place in the U.S. or Canada necessitating a flight one day prior to the cruise, one (1) hotel room, double occupancy, will be provided in Ft. Lauderdale on the night prior to the cruise departure. Hotel will be chosen by our ShipRocked/MSC Cruise Line sponsor at their discretion.

5. ALL GROUND TRANSPORTATION TO and FROM THE FT. LAUDERDALE AIRPORT TO and FROM THE CRUISE SHIP AND POSSIBLY TO AND FROM THE HOTEL IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER. So, the winner must be able to rent a car and have a valid driver’s license OR instead pay their own way on the airport and/or hotel shuttles and/or city taxi to/from ship and hotel.
