  • HELLOOOOOOO, DEE!

First off, love you & the HOH! You take me back to the best time of my life, when the bands and the tunes were at their best. It was a time that I still consider magical for those of us lucky to be living in the ‘80s, where I personally can say that I lived the most…you know, before life really came along and kicked me in the ass with sickness and other things. I would love to hear the Scorpions’ “Dynamite” because after 40 years, they are still dynamite. As a fan who was lucky enough to see them in 2007 & 2010, I gotta tell ya, they are still kicking it hard!
On a personal note, I would like to THANK you because you never let me down. I have never listened to HOH where you did not play the Scorps and it’s great because you hardly ever hear them being played by the radio stations. I really appreciate that and you AND your radio show immensely!!!!

LONG LIVE THE ‘80′S METAL MUSIC FOREVER!!!!!!

    Thank you again,

–Cora in Saint John, N.B. Canada, listening to Big John 98.9 FM

Jay Jay French Unveils The Pinkburst Project

April 18, 2011

Jay Jay French with his daughter SamTwisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French has launched The Pinkburst Project, a collection of custom-made guitars and amps built to create awareness for the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation. As part of the Project, the equipment will be auctioned to help raise funds for research, education and support for those affected by uveitis and other inflammatory eye diseases. On a very cool note, Twisted Sister will play a benefit concert for The Pinkburst Project on Friday, April 29, at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square, NYC.

The incredible one-of-a-kind collection up for auction includes custom guitars from Gibson, Fender, Paul Reed Smith, Epiphone, Gretsch and Martin, and custom amps from Marshall, Fender, Vox, Mesa, Orange, Hartke and Diamond. All will be offered for sale during the Skinner Fine Musical Instruments Auction on Sunday, May 1, 2011, in Boston.

“The Pinkburst Project was my way of calling attention to the virtually unknown disease called uveitis,” says Jay Jay. “In a world of cookie-cutter fundraisers, I wanted to do something that was different and really exciting, something that would get lots of attention with collectors of musical instruments, something never done before (and probably never again) and something that could hopefully raise a lot of money.”

Uveitis is the leading cause of blindness among American girls, and one that Jay Jay and his family have been dealing with since his daughter, Samantha, was diagnosed with the condition at six years old. Samantha has successfully kept her sight thanks in no small part to the work of Dr. Stephen Foster and his associated doctors at MERSI (Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution) in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Foster and his Foundation will reap the benefit of this auction.

You can check out more info on The Pinkburst Project, and get up close and personal with the items up for auction right here.

Tickets for the Twisted Sister concert can be scored through Ticketmaster or directly through the Best Buy Theater box office (no service charge!) located at 1515 Broadway at W. 44th Street in NYC. Phone: 212.930.1950.

  • Dee,
I listen to your show every weekend on 94.9 The Works in Laredo, Texas. I started to listen to metal during the ‘80s when it was coming at you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether it was a concert, music video or just on the radio itself I got hooked on it and haven’t been able to ever let it go. I am requesting “Jelly Roll” by the band Blue Murder. First of all because, John Sykes is a talented guitarist and who knew that the dude could sing? Second, I love this song because nowhere in it is the word “Jelly Roll” even mentioned and that makes me wonder how the songwriter came up for the inspiration of this song. So, if you could please play it I would love to hear it! Thanks!

Twisted Sister’s A.J. Pero announced as National Spokesperson for Fallen Blue

April 4, 2011

Fallen Blue was created as a means to provide support, both emotional and financial, for the families of police officers who are killed outside the line of duty. It is with great pride that we are honored to announce that A.J. Pero has become our National Spokesperson. Mr. Pero has spent his life entertaining rock music fans as the drummer for Twisted Sister. He has also dedicated his life to helping others less fortunate with his charity work.
clip_image004
“My name is A.J. Pero and I play drums for the Heavy Metal Band, TWISTED SISTER. I have been asked by John and Rachael from Fallen Blue to be a part of the Brotherhood. I jumped at the opportunity. I have become the National Spokesperson for this non-profit organization called Fallen Blue. I am honored to be a part of this family, this vital organization. I will help out 150%, so we can achieve our goals. Our goals are to help the families of these brave men and women who die outside the line of duty. When a police officer is killed outside the line of duty – whether accidentally or by their own hand due to job related stress – they don’t receive the benefits. Some families can’t even afford to have a funeral, never mind future bills. I’ve experienced that years ago when a friend on the job, stressed out and emotionally fried, shot himself. Our neighborhood stood together to help the wife and children. We had benefits and cookouts to raise money, but it just wasn’t enough. This organization can and will become vital nationwide if we all recognize this is a reality and pull together our resources for all Law Enforcement Officers. Even though there are many different branches, we are all the same underneath and need to be treated as such. We would also like to eventually erect a physical Memorial where we can go and honor those killed outside the line of duty.”

Please join us in welcoming A.J. Pero to our cause, and check out http://fallenblue.org to keep up with our latest efforts to help serve those who protect us.

Win a trip to the M3 Rock Festival!

April 1, 2011

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER!

M3winners
After sifting through thousands of great entries, the HOH is happy to announce we have a Grand Prize winner for the VIP trip to the M3 Rock Festival next weekend – Mike Kinler from Luling, Louisiana who listens to Bayou 95.7 – WKBU!

There were many reasons we liked Mike’s entry:

1) He was a first responder who weathered out Hurricane Katrina and stayed to help.

2) He wanted to set a good example for his two kids, so he went back to law school.

3) He actually admits losing his virginity to … Warrant! “Cherry Pie” anyone?

4) He proudly admits to being an ex-mulleteer … and he sent us a photo to prove it. Mike, that is F-I-N-E ! ! !

Mike has decided to take his lovely wife Mary to the show. In addition to getting the free airfare, hotel and show tickets, Mike and Mary will be meeting lots of the bands on the bill, and we have confirmed that they will even be able to hang out with Warrant and tell them his story!

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest. Next week we’ll announce the runner-up list, who along with Mike, will all be receiving the new CDs from Whitesnake, Mr. Big and Gary Cherone’s Hurtsmile, all courtesy of Frontiers Records.

Here’s Mike’s winning entry:

Dee, I am a proud ex-mullet wearing headbanger from the New Orleans Area. I may not have the hair any more but the music lives on inside my heart. First let me tell you how my life has changed since my younger days. I am now a husband and father of 2. I went through hurricane Katrina, and since my present job makes me a first responder I stayed and rode out the storm here in New Orleans.

Since the storm I have returned to school to get a degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. I am a senior and about to graduate in May. I know it is a little late to be back in school at the age of 38, but I wanted to be a good example for my kids. This would be a great graduation gift after 4 years of a fulltime job, full time school, and full time family. I could really use the weekend away and listening to some kick-ass metal bands from my day rocking on stage would be a dream come true. I have seen almost every one of these bands at one time in my life and some more than once, but never together. I even lost my virginity as Warrant was spinning on my record player…that’s right…vinyl before vinyl was considered retro and cool. Don’t even think I had a cassette player at that time.

winner_bwI am sure you will have a lot of great emails to pick through but I hope you at least consider my request to be the one who goes to the show, I would even consider taking the wife with me for the weekend. :-) Since she has been great support as I have been so, so, so, so, so busy the last few years. <-- catch that hint about how I could use this get away again? because I could do a bunch more as subtle as that one.

Rock on brother, Mike

p.s. I still have my mullet pictures from 1989 if you need to verify that I had said mullet!

HOH Skully Thanks to ALL the HOH and Metal Fans who entered the contest!

WHITESNAKE

whitesnakeWhitesnake’s FOREVERMORE finds founder/singer/songwriter David Coverdale and company returning to their no-holds-barred, bluesiest, sexiest rock n’ roll roots. This will be Whitesnake’s first release via the Italian-based Frontiers Records label. FOREVERMORE was recorded, produced and mixed by Los Bros Brutalos (Coverdale, Doug Aldrich and Michael McIntyre) at Snakebyte Studios and Grumblenott Studios & Villas in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, with additional work at Casa Dala, Sherman Oaks, CA. Whitesnake unleash the brand new single and video, “Love Will Set You Free.” Directed by Devin DeHaven/Fortress Entertainment (Papa Roach, Method Man, Talib Kweli), the video was shot in Lake Tahoe, NV and features cameos by Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale’s son Justin and wife, Cindy (who is the inspiration for the song). “Love Will Set You Free” is the first single from the new Whitesnake album, FOREVERMORE.

Formed in 1977, and steered by the legendary David Coverdale, Whitesnake carry a rightful reputation as one of the world’s leading rock n’ roll bands. Coverdale’s blues roots, combined with a feral sense of rockin’ and rollin’, have consistently shaped the ‘Snake’s sound along with Coverdale’s love and appreciation of impeccable musicianship. Whitesnake’s ascent to the very top of the rock n’ roll heap was confirmed with 1987’s self-titled mega-platinum album, which saw two massive Top 10 hits, two #1 singles with “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love” and a virtual 24-hour domination of MTV around the world.
Whitesnake is: David Coverdale (vocals), Doug Aldrich (guitars), Reb Beach (guitars), Michael Devin (bass) and Brian Tichy (drums).

MR. BIG

mrbigShredder rock-pop metallers Mr. Big are back with brand new album WHAT IF… The new studio release finds all four original band members reuniting for their first album in 14 years. Produced by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Rush, Iron Maiden), the first single from the album, “Undertow,” is impacting radio now. Released last month overseas, WHAT IF… has hit the European album charts with strong respective debuts including: #36 in Switzerland, #50 in Germany, #71 in Austria, #71 in Italy and #75 in Sweden.

WHAT IF…will be released in a special edition CD + DVD in digipak, regular CD, vinyl and digital download and in a limited edition luxury box including the CD, DVD, LP and exclusive memorabilia. The DVD includes videos of “Undertow” and “All The Way Up” plus a documentary “making of” the album including interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the four band members. Tour dates will be announced later this year.

Formed in 1988, Mr. Big forged its place in hard rock history by combining trademark virtuosic musicianship with stellar vocal harmonies. The original (and now reunited) line-up features vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Pat Torpey. The quartet produced numerous hit songs that ranged across a wide array of rock genres, including the ubiquitous “To Be With You,” which was a Billboard Hot 100 #1 single in 15 countries for weeks, propelling the band to huge international success and record sales in the multi-millions.Formed in 1988, Mr. Big forged its place in hard rock history by combining trademark virtuosic musicianship with stellar vocal harmonies. HURTSMILE

hurtsmileThis is the latest from Gary Cherone (Extreme, Van Halen), who has teamed up with his brother Mark to write his most succinct record to date. The self-titled, HURTSMILE is a raw sonic sucker punch in the face! From the opening buzz saw riff of “Just War Theory” to the epic finale of “Slave” and “Beyond The Garden/Kicking Against the Goads”, Gary continues to push and poke you in the ear with his lyrically provocative themes.

“Hurtsmile was a long time coming… I always wanted to write a record with my brother,” says Gary. “I’m a big fan of Mark’s song writing and his snarling guitar riffs.” The timing was right as Extreme was in-between their touring and record cycle, leaving Gary the freedom. They recruited Joe Pessia (bass) an alumnus of Nuno Bettencourt’s Dramagods as well as the guitar player for Tantric. Joe also engineered, and co-produced the record with Gary. To round off the lineup they enlisted heavy hitter Dana Spellman on drums “It’s an east coast/Boston thing,” states Gary. “Mark, my brother, was in a band with Nuno’s brother… Joe was in Nuno’s band and Dana was a friend, and student of Mike Mangini (former Extreme drummer) … we like to keep it in the family.”

The lineup is not the only thing familiar with the band. In true Cherone fashion, the record is chock full of swaggering guitar, soaring vocals and the trademark Cherone eclecticism on tracks such as “Jesus Would You Meet Me”, the reggae-tinged “Just War Reprise” and the Dylan-esque “The Murder of Daniel Faulkner (4699)”. “Hurtsmile was about returning to my roots, writing a record in my basement, a straight up rock ‘n’ roll record… but it turned out to be more diverse and ambitious than I expected.”

Gary is no stranger to taking on intense topics, and Hurtsmile is no exception. The first half of the record is a group of more loosely knit songs such as the cynically inquisitive “Just War Theory”, the limit’s of free speech “Tolerance Song” and the disturbingly mesmerizing “Kaffur (Infidel)”, inspired by the beheading of journalist Daniel Pearl.
The 2nd half of the record is more conceptually cohesive; an introspective look at the nature of man and the condition of the human heart. “Stillborn” introduced earlier, and “Set Me Free” both touch on mans inclination toward darkness, culminating with an epic journey from sin to salvation… “Slave” to “Beyond the Garden/Kicking Against the Goads”.
For the most part both themes are represented as two sides of a record. A concept familiar to Extreme fans but make no mistake, whether reading between the lines or just moved by the visceral power of the music, this is a completely different type of record. Gary adds, “All the boys in the band bring something new to the table, and you’ll never know what hit you!”
