Rockin’ Their Way to Rocklahoma – Winner Announced!

FINALLY….A ROCKLAHOMA WINNER!
All you faithful HOH listeners make our job so tough, and this time, it was really hard, as we received more entries than ever before. But, in the end, we felt we had a clear choice…and his name is Brad Cooper! Read his entry…and notice that this is sort of a two-fer…satisfying two listeners, two brothers, at once:
I’m entering to win this dream come true trip for my brother, Greg. He is a high school teacher in Lincoln, NE and would be the ultimate Rocklahoma Guest because he not only lives off of the 80’s hair band and metal music till this day, but uses it as a tool in his classroom. “Get in…Sit down…Shut up…And hold on!” frequently gets the kids attention at the start of class and the kids who know it love it. He has found that discussing 80’s music is a great way to relate to a lot of the students who may not make a connection to any other teacher in school. There is no doubt that a kid is influenced by his teacher when he sees him headbanging in the front row of a Motley Crue concert. Countless times in 12 years of teaching my brother has told me stories of positive interaction between him and students about the best music era, songs, and groups of all time leading to improved attendance, behavior and grades in his classroom. Of course he has also done all of the “must does” to be considered a diehard fan. From purchasing albums, cassettes, cd’s, and now mp3’s, to having a picture disc collection surpassing 100 records, all displayed in his basement in a room dedicated to his shelves full of concert souvenirs and memorabilia, to buying magazines and hanging the posters on his bedroom walls, to reading magazines and books to know about all the bands, to waiting in countless lines at autograph sessions, to attending concerts galore (Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Poison, Kiss, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Cinderella, Bullet Boys, Slaughter, Faster Pussycat, Ratt, Warrant, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Rob Zombie, Ozzy, Quiet Riot, Wild Side, Wasp, Kix, Skid Row, Brittney Fox, Bang Tango with many of these bands being seen multiple times and quite a few bands I know I am missing). He however has never been to a bash like Rocklahoma. All of these experiences payoff in the classroom when the student realizes my brother is not fake and full of bull when the topic of conversation after class turns into a vigorous debate about who is the best front man or which band and its members are most lucky to be alive. And of course my brother would say Dee is the best front man ever, edging Alice out slightly. Who can disagree? Greg is the ultimate 80’s hairband and metal fan because he lives it daily, loves it always and most importantly influences lives with it. I present to you, your ULTIMATE ROCKLAHOMA GUEST!
– Sincerely, Brad Cooper Hebron, NE, listening to Z92 Omaha, NE (KEZO)
And, to make this complete, here is the entry from his brother, Greg:
I have been a fanatic of Twisted Sister since I was 12. I am now 37. I have a wall in my house dedicated to Twisted Sister. I have collectables of Twisted Sister from their picture discs lining the wall all the way to a Twisted Sister Zippo lighter. Twisted Sister has been such an influence that even my daughter writes the TS symbol all over the place. She gets disappointed when I wash the car because the symbol gets washed off. Heck, I am a chemistry teacher and even one of the labs that I do has the TS symbol as an example written into it. That’s just Twisted Sister. My room is lined with picture discs of all 80’s hair bands. Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister are my top two favorites. Of course, you can imagine my Alice Cooper wall. Dee came to Lincoln once on his SMF tour. It was the best night of my life. I was down front and about passed out half way through the show from all the adrenaline. My brother and I left that concert dripping in sweat. It was like we just got poured on from the rain. I can sit and tell you, as well as other 80’s fanatics, about all the concerts I have attended and how 80’s hair bands have been a huge part of my life and survival. But, that doesn’t make me stand out from the rest. All hair band fanatics have a common thread between them of the same experiences. Putting the experience into words isn’t possible. The feelings, love, rush that such music gives is hard to explain. I have not attended a Rocklahoma; but it would be an incredible experience. Last year Steelheart, Britny Fox, and Bulletboys stopped in town on their way through to Rocklahoma. Damn good shows. I wish I could write some words to express how incredible winning this would be. I sometimes think about what kind of questions I would ask Dee if I had the chance to talk to him and I don’t even know what I would ask. All I see is myself standing there dumbfounded in awe. I know I would say, “Thank you.”
- Greg Cooper, Lincoln, NE, listening to Z92 Omaha, NE (KEZO)
