Ilknur listens to KKRK 98.9 FM in Tulsa and has just scored the new Vixen CD “Live and Learn” and a brand new autographed by Vixen purple Luna guitar PLUS a phone call from Jan Kuehnemund herself !!
It was a very, very tough call on this one, with many entries fighting it out for the top slot. The Vixen ladies were all blown away by the sheer number of entries, the amazing stories - and the heartfelt thank-you’s and support expressed by the HOH fans to the band! (What can we say? We here at the HOH KNOW our Fans are the best!)
Thanks to ALL the HOH Vixen Fans for entering! Here are all the winners, and the winning entries, below…
OUR VIXEN GRAND PRIZE WINNER:
Ms. Ilknur Dunlap
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Listens to the HOH on KKRK, 98.9 FM
Prizes Won:
She won the Vixen autographed Luna guitar, a copy of the new Vixen CD “Live and Learn” and the Phone call from Jan Kuehnemund!
Her Winning Contest Entry:
Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey in the early 80’s it
wasn’t until my late teen years when I came across Vixen while
searching for some of the 80’s greatest bands.
It was love at first
sound! I was immediately hooked when I heard the intro to “Edge of a
Broken Heart”. However, it wasn’t exactly the catchy tunes and the
notorious big hair that was the attraction for me. Eventually, I
realized Vixen to me, was much more special than your average 80’s
metal band. Thanks to the internet, the more I researched the band,
the more I learned and the more I got into it.
As Jan Kuehnemund’s
baby, Vixen was the perfect band of 4 women who had the balls to rock
hard in a man’s world. It was as much the attitude as their
incredible musicianship, combined with their exceptional stage
presence. Vixen was definitely one of the rare bands, if not the
rarest, that somehow made life so much easier. From then on my life-
long passion began.
Soon I started to collect Vixen merchandise and
memorabilia. I may not have the world’s most extensive Vixen
collection, but what started out as a hobby turned out to be a little
more than just a few records. My teen years may be long gone but I
still have a Vixen “shrine” - as some of my friends would like to call
it- in my bedroom and in the office area of the house. The most
amazing thing is that my husband actually puts up with it and even
pays for some of the merchandise I continue to buy and collect to
this day! (Please see part of my collection here.)
Because of my age and
location at the time, I was never able to see Vixen in their heyday.
It wasn’t until I got married and moved to the U.S., which was just
around the time when Vixen was reformed and started touring again
that I got to see them live. (Of course, there was actually a gig
before that when I was still in Istanbul and I literally begged my
future husband to go just so he could tell me all about it, hopefully
get a few autographs and say hi to Jan for me who was somehow vaguely
aware of her crazy little fan from overseas whom she had heard of
through someone I had corresponded with on the internet.) I remember
changing my flight and arriving a few days earlier so we could make a
6 hour drive up to Missouri to see Vixen the next day - mind you after
about a 14 hour flight the day before. I was so excited, nervous and
tired that I actually got drunk on my ass by the time they finished
their set and started mingling in with the fans. Still, I met the
band and had a photo taken, which is of course, one of my prize
possessions.
The following year, I got into my husband’s head and we somehow
decided that everyone has the right to get Vixenized! Therefore,
Vixen should come play in our town so all of our friends and a lot of
other fans could truly experience this amazing band. So, as crazy as
this may sound when I go back and think about it, we did book the
band and promoted the show - the whole nine yards!. It was definitely
an experience beyond words and everyone who attended the show that
night was totally blown away by the entire band, which of course made
me the happiest person since I absolutely love sharing Vixen’s music
with others. As a matter of fact, the clip of “You Wish” uploaded by
BuzzChic at www.houseofhaironline.com is from that show and it was taken
by me. So, thank you for featuring it!
During one of our
conversations with the band, I was once referred to by Jenna as the
biggest female Vixen fan. I have certainly made quite a few friends
through Vixen and their music, and I know for a fact that every one
of them is very special and have the same kind of passion for the
band that I do. Whether or not one of my crazy antics could qualify
me as the ultimate Vixen fan is a question you have to answer.
However, to me, being a “Vixenite”, whose numbers are growing every
single day, is also something special. So, watch out Kiss Army!
Vixenites might just one day, take over!

1983 was the year i first saw triumph live.it was the most
electrifying and innovative concert i ever saw.i remember standing in
the second row on the floor and they came out and i was so close to
the stage when the flash pots exploded it singed my eyebrows and they
were absolutely fantastic.rik emmett is absolutely my favorite guitar
player and to see him live was just a thrill that only can be
understood by a live performance.they are the best at what they did
and at the time were at the pinnacle of their success and all i have
more to say is,HEY RIK HOW ABOUT JUST ONE MORE TOUR but if i cant
have that let me relive it again with a live dvd performance.and DEE

3. Michael Williams

WRBR 103.9 The Bear
I got to see Triumph on the Allied Forces Tour. I remember
they just blew everyone away with the kickass music and the special
effects( the use of Lasers). When they did Magic Power, a green Laser
formed what looked like a giant green glass triangle. Rik Emmett was
playing his guitar and stepped sideways through the glass, and I
thought this is like magic. That was a long time ago , but I’m 45,
still have the long hair, still bang my head, like my music so loud
that you can hear it in the next time zone. I hope I win so that I
can relive the magic which I haven’t seen in a long time. Keep rockin
Dee , and Long Live The House Of Hair.

KQRC 98.9 The Rock
I have been a huge Triumph fan since the late ’70s, my first
rock concert was Triumph and Mountain here in Kansas City, back in
1982. My sisters took me against my mother’s wishes, and we had a
blast. I still have the T-shirt I bought for $8 at that show!! I wore
it almost everyday. Since then, I’ve them everytime they came to
town. And I have seen Rik Emmett on his solo tours. I caught him the
first time in ‘95 here in town, then my best friend and I drove 9
hours to Chicago to see him at the House of Blues, two years in a
row, 2005 and 2006. We have gotten the chance to chat with him each
time we’ve seen him solo! I want this DVD so bad because: I have one
of the original VHS copies, but I have played it so much, I wore it
out. I have bid on several of these DVDs on Ebay, but I get out bid.
So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE choose me to win one of these DVDs!!! PS, I
get up every Sunday morning at 8am to listen to HOH on my radio
station. Do you know how hard that is after a night of partying??? I
bet someone there does!! But I do it because…If it ain’t METAL…
Its CRAP!! Thanks Dee!

I was a junior in high school in ‘83 and my parents would
not let me go the festival. I begged and begged but I was not allowed
to go see my favorite band of all time, Triumph. I remember loving
Rik Emmitt’s smile (he has always had perfect teeth) and I just was
devastated when I couldn’t go. I would love to win the CD/DVD so I
could actually relive it for the first time.
6. Jeff Johns

WRQK 106.9 FM in Canton, Ohio
I was introduced to Triumph’s music back in the early 80s
and immediately became a die-hard fan. I have listened to their music
for so long, I know all the lyrics by heart. There were so many great
bands in the 80’s that it was really hard for any one of them to
stand out. Triumph certainly did in my mind. Their innovative and
positive approach to the metal music industry had a lasting impact on
other bands at that time, as well as future ones. It was great to see
them receive long-overdue recognition for their contributions to the
industry by their induction into the Canadian Rock & Roll HOF. After
all these years I still listen to their music regularly, and it never
gets tiresome. Their entire portfolio of music has always seemed to
fit my life, no matter what was going on in it at the time. That
being said I am sorry to say that for a variety of reasons, I never
had the opportunity to see my favorite band perform live! What a
crying shame. To make matters worse, I know those who have so I know
what I missed. Seeing this historic performance at the US Festival
for the first time would really help make up for that unfortunate
fact. Thanks, Jeff

Triumph Rocks, They are one of The GREATEST 3 man bands ever
along with Rush and ZZ Top. Ric Emmett is simply amazing on guitar! I
was able to see him live in a small venue in the 90s. Emmett is
Awesome! It would be really cool to see these guys put the past
behind them and re-unite. The US show was at their peak even though
they had many more great songs afterwards. I am definitely lacking on
Triumph in my CD Library and would truly love to add this Triumph CD
& DVD to it. Thanx Dee and staff. Keep up the great work on your
fabulous show. I wake up to the show every Sunday morning @ 10am. You
guys ROCK!! Ray Boucher Waterford, MI, WRIF 101-FM

I was there, but as time goes on and brain cells die you
forget things. And that weekend many brain cells died. I was there
all 3 days but I only attended the Heavy Metal Day. Myself and 3
other buddies borrowed my parents old beat down motorhome and spent
the first night in the parking lot warming up for Heavy Metal Day,
along with a few thousand others. Heavy Metal Day was one of the
hottest and smogiest days I have ever seen in So Cal. The beer was
flowing, the chicks were half naked and the stage crews were spraying
the crowds down with water cannons. Could not have got any better than
that. The two bands that to this day stand out in my mind were
Triumph and the Scorpions. They blew the smog right out of Glenn
Helen that day. On the other hand the most disapointing band hands
down was Van Halen. Roth was so drunk that he didn’t even know the
words to his own music. For a 18 year old kid to attend that was the
best concert that could of ever been put on stage. I do not have any
pictures of that day and my one and only US Festival Heavy Metal Day
T-Shirt has turned to dust long ago. Reliving that day with the
Triumph CD/DVD would make a transplanted Metal Head in Wyoming very
happy. Thanks Dave

Truimph is the most underated band ever. i see it as my
personal mission to expose as many people as possible to the sweet
guitar licks of rik emmett along with gil moore’s bonham like
druming. the harmonies of magic power and hold on to the thundering
roar of rock and roll machine make triumph one of the greatest bands
of all time. i wasn’t there at the us fesital but if it happened
today i would do whatever it took to see them. only this dvd/cd will
satisfy my appetite for triumph until there is a reunion. you don’t
know rock and roll until you know Triumph!

I didn’t see, hear nor smell that day at the festival. As a
matter of fact I was in northern Manitoba at the time, likely
listening to one of Triumph’s albums. ‘N I ain’t kiddin’! I remember
listening over and over again to “Rock ‘n Roll Machine.” The song has
a great, loud listening lead guitar solo. I would lay on the floor
between the speakers and rustle around til I found the sweet spot.
Right perfectly, exactly, precicely in the middle of the speakers.
The stereo was already cranked to the song before which just happened
to be their version of Rocky Mountain Way. An excellent version it is
too. Then I’d lie in wait while the needle moved across the dead -
empty section of the vinyl. It seemed like forever then suddenly the
song burst into my head with a roll of the drums, a slap of the bass
and a quick shot of Rik’s guitar all at once to open up the song.
Maaaaaan that is really something to listen to whilst lieing there
relaxed. As a teenager I went to see the Just A Game concert and
still have two tee-shirts. One brother and I would play the game on
the inside of the fold out album cover. I think I have everything
they ever released . I recently picked up from Winnipeg’s only real
rock station- 92 CITI fm , Triumph’s Classics CD. I listen to these
fellas on a regular basis and have for 30 years or more. It isn’t
about to stop. I can’t re-live the US festival but I’d sure like a
chance to Live it. Thanks for your time folks.
Thanks to ALL the HOH and Triumph Fans who entered the Triumph CD contest!

10 Winners of the Iron Maiden 3-DVD Set, Death on the Road
Prize Won:
One Iron Maiden 3-DVD Set, Death on the Road!
Winner’s Names
1. Kyle Froehlich
St. Clair, MN
93.1 KXLP - Mankato, MN
My name is Kyle and I’m a Deputy Sheriff in southern
Minnesota. I am the biggest Iron Maiden fan because under my bullet-
proof vest, I always wear one of my Iron Maiden t-shirts (If the vest
doesn’t stop a bullet, hopefully Eddy will!). Also, when I make a
traffic stop, if the driver doesn’t like Iron Maiden, THEY GET A
TICKET! I always have Iron Maiden playing in my squad car and it
never fails, everytime I’m hauling someone to The Iron Bar Motel,
they always want to know who I am listening too. I then get mad and
yell at them because they don’t know who Iron Maiden is. And if
anyone even tries to rip on Iron Maiden in any way, I charge them
with Disorderly Conduct or Obstructing Legal Process! So, if you come
to Southern Minnesota, you better be an Iron Maiden Fan and if you’re
not, don’t let me catch you speeding! Thanks, and keep up the great
work - or else!
2. Laura Penney

102.5 kbrq the bear
I have been an Iron Maiden fan since I was a little girl. I
had three older brothers that were all metal heads, and since I did
almost everything they did, I had to be one, too. That was how my
love for Iron Maiden began. While my little girl friends were off at
skating rinks and slumber parties, I was up in my brother’s room
watching the latest Iron Maiden video or VCR tape. Eddie was my hero,
and Run to the Hills was my anthem. Now that I am a high school
teacher I see students wearing the familiar Eddie t-shirts, and see
the Iron Maiden logo on their book covers, and it makes me smile.
Everytime my Run to the Hills ringtone goes off next to some
unsuspecting student, I can’t help but smile to myself when they look
at me with surprise and disbelief. I smile at them and tell them that
I was a head banger long before they were born. Even though I look
like an average young woman on the outside eager to reach their minds
through what I teach…on the inside I have the soul of a true head-
banging metal lover. Long live Eddie!!! Long live The House of Hair!!!
3. Doug Gross
Apple Valley, MN
93x KXXR-FM, Minneapolis, MN
This is a question that I could go on for hours answering,
but for the sake of who has to read this, I will try to get right to
the point . The first Album I ever bought was Piece of Mind in 1983.
Yes, I said Album and I bought it at Musicland(anyone else remember
that store?). I can still remember when Iron Maiden was scheduled to
play the Duluth, MN Arena on the Somewhere in Time tour in 1987. The
show was cancelled due to the fact of the stage would not fit in the
arena. I was devastated. That was going to be my chance to see the
mighty Iron Maiden for the 1st time. I was also going to hear my
favorite song Wasted Years played live. Oh well, it was not to be. I
have seen them many times since, but they have not played Wasted
Years at any of the shows(Damn!!). I have been a fan ever since(24
years and counting). I appreciate the fact that they continue to put
out great new Metal. Brave New World, Dance of Death, and A Matter of
Life and Death are great metal albums. I was also a fan of the X
factor and Futureal with Blaze Bayley on vocals. I am also glad that
they have played songs off of those cd’s on recent tours. Even though
I seem to be in the minority, I am glad that they don’t play the same
songs over and over again every tour. I love to hear the classics,
but I also like hearing the new stuff. I traveled 6 hours in October
of 2006 to see them in Chicago, IL I knew they were playing A Matter
of Life and Death in it’s entirety ahead of time and was glad. It is
a great piece of work, and great to see those songs performed live.
Over that time I have seen the band play live countless times and
acquired a lot of Iron Maiden merchandise(albums, cds, shirts,
posters) etc. What I am most proud of though, is the number of people
of different generations that I have introduced Iron Maiden too.
Cousins, Friends, etc. My greatest achievement in Iron Maiden fandom
though is the fact that my two sons ages 3 and 6 are Iron Maiden
fans. They each proudly wear their Iron Maiden shirts, with the
Killers Album Eddie on the front, that I had made for them at a T-
shirt store. Every week when their Mom is at work, they beg me to
play “Concert Songs” as they call them. They ask me to play “The
video with the guy that cracks the window”. This refers to the
beginning of the Visions of the Beast DVD. Their favorite videos are
“Run to the Hills, Wasted Years, and Holy Smoke”. It would be great
to win this DVD so there would be some different Iron Maiden “Concert
Songs” I could watch with my sons. Here’s to another 24 years of Iron
Maiden. UP THE IRONS !!! Thanks for reading this. Doug
4. Chris Clifton

I am Iron Maiden’s mascot, Eddie’s illegitimate son. He has
never recognized me nor offered any support to us back home. I’d
probably feel better if I had one more piece of dear old dad to add
to my collection. BTW…. King Dee, YOU ROCK… (If all else fails…
suck up)
5. Aaron Starkey
Olathe, Kansas
98.9 KQRC
I have three kids under the age of 6. I don’t get to listen
to my Maiden unless I am on my way to work. I end my trip to work
EVERY DAY with Powerslave, and finish my trip home with Aces High.
Powerslave was truly their greatest work. I think that I deserve to
win simply because I have three kids under 6! I don’t think that I
will ever hear a Maiden song on any damn Kids Bop album (like Hinder
he he he)!
6. Mitch Piles
Springfield, MO
KXUS 97.3
Dee, et al. How many fans can say that they use Iron Maiden
as a teaching tool for their children? By using Maiden’s music, I
have taught him about English Literature (Rime of the Ancient
Mariner) and Greek mythology (Flight of Icarus). He has also learned
about history both ancient and current, ie: U.S. western expansion/
plight of the Indian (Run to the Hills), WW I (The Trooper), WW II
(Aces High), Ancient Egypt (Powerslave), not to mention medieval
torture devices (Iron Maiden). He’s also learned about nuclear
proliferation (2 Minutes to Midnight), Vietnam (Back in the Village),
and the War on Terror (Entire new Album, which KICKS ASS!) So, as you
can see, I have not only supported them with my own record
collection, but also spread the news to the young. His mother even
approves and she’s a country fan. Therefore, I feel I am the biggest
Maiden fan out there. Up the Irons.
7. Tom Maynard

Ok. I cut off my mullet, put down my bass guitar and gave up
my dreams of being a rockstar to get a job as an accountant (?!?) of
all things. Not very metal, but that was Geezer Butler’s fallback
career choice, wasn’t it? Anyway, I’ve been an accountant for over 10
years and since then, every password I’ve had has been Maiden-
related. After 10 years of having to change it every 90 days, you
have to get pretty creative. Like AsmithRE, for example. The first
part is pretty obvious, but RE comes from the fact that Adrian’s
guitar is panned to the right ear in the Live After Death album. I
may be an accountant, but I’m obsessed with Maiden and know way more
about them than my buds who, on the outside at least, would appear to
have more Maiden-cred then me. They’ve been my favorite band since
1990 (when I was 15). Since No Prayer for the Dying, I’ve bought
every album on the release date. That includes the Blaze Bayley years
- UP THE IRONS!!!

Dear Dee, I am a mother of a 12 year old who is a huge Iron
Maiden fan, no doubt he gets his love of metal from his mother. I
play drums and now he too plays though he is much better than I am,
even though he is only 12 and has only been playing for four months.
His favorite drummer is Nikko, he will sit for hours with the
headphones on and attempt to play whatever comes on the radio.
Unfortunately they don’t play Iron Maiden as often as they should. I
recently had surgery to remove a brain tumor and therefore have not
worked in a couple of years, this leaves very little money for any
extras, he really wants this DVD and since I cannot purcahse it I
really wish you would choose him as one of the winners, not only for

I’ve been the biggest fan since before I saw them with
twisted sister in columbus ohio 1983. Ever since I heard them I’ve
tried to collect as much as I could. From posters to lighters to rare
back stage passes. I’ve seen them all across the states.from little
clubs in cleveland to big arenas in california. Every tour I try to
get to as many shows as i can collecting more stuff each time. I
didn’t hate when bruce did his own thing because the music stayed
true to maiden. I’ve had special paint work done to my cars and one
motorcycle. People call me crazy when I show them my world slavery
tour tattoo with Eddie holding a cigar and martini glass , but it
was my favorite and unique. That’s why I should be considered IRON
MAIDEN’s BIGGEST FAN. ROCK ON MAIDEN !!!!!!!!!!!

Ten reasons: 10. I think “Number of the Beast” is about my
ex girlfriend. 9. I hear Maiden influences in epic Phish songs.
(Note:I do like Phish.) 8. Everyone is so worried, “who’s better Sammy
or Dave”, I know the only real question of importance is “Bruce or
Paul.” 7. When I first heard “Burnin for You” by BOC and “Cut My Life
Into Pieces” Papa Roach, I thought it was Maiden. Only a true Maiden
fan would think this 6. I believe no one has ever committed suicide to
“Piece of Mind” . I believe that teens that listen to Britney Spears
and Christina Aguillera are more likely to commit suicide. 5. When my
cover band plays “The Trooper”, we can accurately measure 4 minutes
and 16 seconds. 4. People that have never heard of them except
through me think the name of the band is “F***in Maiden.” 3. My
Favorite episode of Beavis and Butthead was when they went to jail
and sang Prisoner. 2. I believe Steve Harris ranks amongst Chris
Squire, Geddy Lee, as best songwriting bass players.(Kip Winger did
not make my list.) 1. GOD FAMILY MAIDEN COUNTRY.

New 3-DVD “Death on the Road” set!
Iron Maiden’s live album DEATH ON THE ROAD captured the heavy-metal legends at a stop on their 2003 tour, which promoted both that year’s DANCE OF DEATH and the best-of collection EDWARD THE GREAT. Recorded at the Westfalenhalle Arena in Dortmund, Germany, this concert film presents DEATH ON THE ROAD in visual form, with Maiden tearing through newer fare from DANCE OF DEATH as well as older classics like “Can I Play with Madness” and “The Trooper” for a potent showcase of singer Bruce Dickinson’s soaring vocals and the band’s trademark three-guitar assault. Finally available after a long wait - and well worth it!
